"The students waiting at NICOCIA have a fully residential environment where they can focus, as well as free time for interactions.

A day for NICOCIA students begins with Japanese and ends with Japanese. Even though it's overseas, this is a Japanese environment. Everyday things can be communicated in Japanese, and there's no need to hold back on expressing the quirks of Japanese culture. There is no environment where the students can focus on Japanese to this extent. Everyone visiting from Japan is surprised, saying, "There are no classes this serious in Japan." That's why NICOCIA students can speak Japanese much faster than those who have studied Japanese at universities or Japanese language schools. Not only can they read and write hiragana and katakana, they also become able to read picture books and look up words in dictionaries. Seeing the freshmen who start learning Japanese for the first time teaching Japanese grammar to their juniors half a year later astonishes everyone from Japan who visits. NICOCIA is fully residential in order to provide such a focused environment. Because of the full residency, all students are women, and moreover, they are single women who can live in the dormitory for six months. Students are selected through an examination from those who are inexperienced in Japan but wish to learn Japanese. Students learn Japanese while encouraging each other in a shared life. All the students are interacting with Japanese people for the first time, but everyone begins to feel a familiarity with Japanese people. That's when their impression of Japanese people starts to change, and they start to find it fun to know about Japan and speak Japanese.This seems to be the secret of NICOCIA's unique international exchange."
